Guitarist Dave Baksh left the band during the spring of 2006 due to creative differences, going on to form the metal-punk outfit Brown Brigade. Sum 41 continued on as a trio, and their first album as such, Underclass Hero, appeared in July 2007. The band eventually returned to being a quartet, replacing Baksh with guitarist Tom Thacker, and began to work on a new album. That new album, entitled Screaming Bloody Murder, appeared in March of 2011. 'Blood in My Eyes,' a single from the album, was nominated for a Grammy that year. However, due to a series of back injuries for Whibley, Sum 41 would not return with new material for half a decade, despite their critical success.

Most of the lyrics on the album focus on politics and are influenced by the band's experience at the Congo. The album also focuses on other themes such as death ('The Bitter End'), depression ('Slipping Away'), anarchy in the world ('I'm Not The One'), and drug addiction ('Angels With Dirty Faces'). The band has mentioned that 'We're All To Blame' is about the 'state of the world due to war, people dying, people living in fear, and the power of corporations, amongst other concerns.' Sum 41 is an awesome band. Had the chance to see them live on a whim when a friend called me up several years ago and just so happened to have a spare ticket.

Controversy arose over some of the videos' violent content. The group made several other videos, including Basketball Butcher and 1-800-Justice, which were originally available exclusively on Sum 41's now-defunct fan club, The Goon Platoon. From 2007 to 2009, Sum 41 ran a series of internet videos, SUM 41 – Road to Ruin (it was originally billed as a weekly series, but episodes were sometimes released months apart). The first episode was released on January 21; it followed the band members' exploits on the group's Singapore 2003 tour. Other episodes featured footage of drunkenness in New Orleans, setting off a fire alarm in a hotel, and a feature about the band's first tour manager. The tenth and last episode featured the band's guitar technician.

It was not all fun and games, however, as their involvement in the charity group War Child Canada had Sum 41 lending a hand in the making of a 2004 documentary covering the effects of war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
